School Project “ABCD - The Beginning" PDF Print E-mail
‘Day Shelter’ for Children throughout the week. The day care centre provides hygienic environment, basic education, mid-day meal (lunch), medical care, etc. This project is for the upliftment of the Street and Under Privileged Children initiated and managed jointly by Samaritan Trust along with Lions Club of J. B. Nagar Andheri (East). Samaritan Trust in April 2009 joined hands with Lions Club, who run Shishuvihar (Balwadi) since 1992 at the premises of Shree Nityanand Municipal School at Sahar Road, Andheri (E).

We mainly target non-schooling or school drops under privileged children, street children and rag pickers children, children who work at young age and children of labourers who are working on roads and construction sites while their children are sitting on roadside or besides the workplace for the whole day doing nothing. We convince these children to register and attend the school program ‘ABCD – The Beginning’.  By their commitment to attend school, theses children have paved way for themselves and made a new beginning towards literacy and education as a result of constant motivation and efforts of the foundation of the center “ABCD – The Beginning”.

Together the enrollment went up to 60 children; out of these 18 children as a result of proper basic school training got from center “ABCD – The Beginning” got qualified for admissions to the regular BMC School and all children start attending school on regular basis.

We provide children basic school training, school items, footwear, medical assistance and one time meal in the afternoon. We encourage them to participate in the in-house sports; we get special sanctions for them to participate in competition of other schools, etc.  We take the children on occasional outings such a picnic, visit to children’s attraction place, we celebrated all main festivals with children of other NGO Community Outreach programme, etc.

On behalf of Samaritan Trust we have our trustee Ms. Shalini Rawal who heads the project providing supervisory and administrative support. We have recruited two teachers who providing selfless service in teaching the children. We also have an attendant who takes care of all the children’s cleanliness, hygiene and safety aspect during the day.

On behalf of Lion’s Club Lion Vasant Contractor and Lion Bharat Parikh are taking care of interaction with BMC and other bodies, Lion Jayant Jariwala is providing guidance based on his years of experience at Balwadi. Lion Mrs. Daksha Gandhi is constantly providing guidance and support. Besides the ones mentioned there are a number of other members of Samaritan Trust and Lion’s Club and are providing their continuous support and encouragement.

Ratna Foundation provides food every day at highly subsidized cost; the food is nutritious and hygienic.

As the next step we intend to partner with almost all children’s social groups and NGO’s to replicate this model across Mumbai city.
